Breast Augmentation: A Natural, Elegant Touch in Harmony with the Female Silhouette

In some women, breast volume may decrease due to genetic structure, childbirth, weight fluctuations, or aging. Sometimes there is asymmetry; sometimes the breasts lose their fullness. This can affect a person not only physically but also psychologically. That’s exactly where breast augmentation comes in — to restore a natural, elegant look that is in harmony with the body.

What Is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure performed to increase breast volume, reshape the breasts, or correct asymmetries. It can be done with silicone implants, fat grafting, or a combination of both. The implant is placed either beneath the existing breast tissue or behind the pectoral muscle.

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia in a sterile operating theatre. The implant is usually placed through a small 4–5 cm incision made in the inframammary fold, along the lower edge of the areola, or in the axilla. The operation lasts 1–2 hours. Most patients stay one night in the hospital and are discharged the following day.

This is one of the most commonly performed aesthetic surgeries worldwide and has a very high patient satisfaction rate.

Why Breast Augmentation?

Every woman’s breast shape, size, and proportions are different. In some cases:

Naturally small breasts
Loss of volume after breastfeeding
Sagging after weight loss
Asymmetry (one breast larger or differently shaped than the other)

In addition, augmentation and shaping can be part of breast reconstruction after breast cancer treatment. For all these reasons, breast augmentation is not only an aesthetic operation but also a transformative process that restores self-confidence.

Preoperative Preparation

A detailed consultation is carried out before surgery. Desired breast size and shape, as well as overall body proportions, are evaluated together. As your surgeon, I offer round or anatomical (teardrop) implant options tailored to the patient’s physique.

If you smoke, you should stop at least 3 weeks before surgery. Blood thinners or pain relievers should be discontinued as advised by your doctor. Because of general anesthesia, do not eat or drink anything after midnight on the night before surgery.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Breast augmentation is performed in a hospital setting under general anesthesia. Through a 4–5 cm incision in the inframammary fold, the implant is placed either beneath the breast tissue or behind the pectoral muscle. The incision is closed with fine stitches, dressings are applied, and the patient is supported with a special surgical bra. The procedure takes on average 1–2 hours, and patients are typically discharged the next day.

In the first few days after surgery, a feeling of tightness, mild pain, and swelling is normal. These symptoms usually subside within a few days. Most patients can return to daily life in 3–4 days, drive after 1 week, and resume sports and full activity at around 1 month.

If the implant is placed behind the muscle, temporary limitation in arm movements may be felt. If dissolvable sutures are used, they do not need to be removed; if not, they are removed in about 10 days.

With implants placed above the muscle, pain is minimal to none. Submuscular placement can cause mild tightness, but this is easily controlled with pain medication.

Yes, as with any surgical procedure, a small scar remains. However, it is concealed in the inframammary fold, making it barely noticeable, and it fades over time.

When performed by an experienced plastic surgeon in appropriate hospital conditions, risks are minimal. Using uncertified implants or operating in inadequate settings increases the risk of complications.

No. Current scientific research shows no link between silicone implants and breast cancer. A rare type of lymphoma (ALCL) has been associated with some textured-surface implants, but the risk is very low.

No. The milk ducts are not disrupted during implant placement; therefore, breastfeeding function is preserved.

New-generation (5th-generation) implants come with lifetime warranties. There is no need to replace them unless a problem occurs.

“Ideal” varies across cultures, ages, and body types. A natural look that is round and full, with balance between the upper and lower poles, and the nipple sitting slightly above the inframammary fold is most commonly preferred. My goal is always a natural, proportional result that harmonizes with the body — nothing excessive, nothing lacking.

In some cases, the patient’s own fat can be used alone or in combination with an implant. Fat grafting is particularly useful for correcting minor asymmetries or softening implant edges. However, its permanence is not as high as silicone implants, and it may cause calcifications that can affect future mammograms.

Immediately after surgery, implants may sit slightly high; they begin to soften and settle into a natural shape around the 3rd week. By the 3rd month, the final appearance is established.
