Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a cosmetic operation in which excess skin, fat, and sometimes muscle tissue are removed or reshaped from the upper and/or lower eyelids. Although the procedure is small, it can create a remarkably positive difference in the overall facial appearance because the eye area is such an expressive part of the face. In some cases, excess skin on the upper eyelid can even cause headaches or a reduced field of vision — meaning the procedure can also provide functional improvement. If it is not combined with another surgery, local anesthesia is usually preferred.
Patients with excess skin, sagging, or puffiness around the eyelids who desire a more youthful and dynamic appearance are suitable candidates.
Although most patients are over 30, younger individuals with hereditary excess skin or eye bags can also benefit from the procedure.
If the excess skin is mild and mainly due to drooping eyebrows, a brow lift alone may be sufficient.
However, if there is a significant amount of excess skin, combining the two procedures will provide a better aesthetic result.
When performed only on the upper or lower lids, the procedure takes about 45 minutes. If both are treated together, it lasts around 90 minutes.
Mild swelling and bruising may occur during the first few days.
Most patients return to work and social life within a week.
Tapes and sutures are typically removed between days 5–7.
Near-complete healing is expected by the end of the first month.
If the lower eyelid has only fat herniation (bags) without excess skin, the fat can be removed through a 5 mm internal incision, leaving no visible scar.
If excess skin is present, an incision is made just below the eyelashes, allowing removal of excess fat and skin. The scar remains hidden in the lash line and becomes barely noticeable over time.
Yes. Eyelid surgery is often combined with other facial aesthetic procedures.
No. The shape of your eyes will not change unless a canthopexy (almond eye lift) is also performed.
No. The eye itself is not touched during the operation. An ointment is applied to keep the eye moist, and the eyelids are gently closed during the procedure.
Although the removal of excess skin and fat is long-lasting, the effects of aging may cause new sagging or puffiness over time — typically after 10 years.
On the upper eyelid, the incision is hidden within the natural crease.
On the lower eyelid, it is hidden just below the lash line.
These scars fade over time and become barely visible.
No. Eyelid surgery does not affect the position of the eyebrows.
The cost of the operation varies depending on the technique and the patient’s individual needs.
