A lip lift, also known as lip shortening surgery, is a procedure designed to reduce the distance between the nose and the upper lip in patients where this distance has increased. This can occur due to aging or genetics and often makes women appear older than they are. For patients where lip filler alone is not enough, a lip lift offers a permanent, highly satisfying, and quick surgical solution.
A lip lift removes excess skin just below the nose to shorten the distance between the nose and the upper lip, while lip filler aims to add volume to the lips. Sometimes, both procedures are needed. In some cases, filler hides the need for a lip lift, while in others, the outward rotation achieved by a lip lift gives enough volume, making filler unnecessary. Therefore, a proper examination and joint decision with the surgeon is the most accurate approach.
- Bullhorn lift (most common): removes skin under the nose in a “bullhorn” shape.
- Central lift: targets only the central part of the upper lip.
- Corner lift: lifts the corners of the mouth upward.
- Lower lip lift: performed just below the lower lip to roll it outward.
Patients whose upper lip–nose distance is longer than 1.5 cm (0.6 inch) are suitable candidates. Smokers must avoid smoking during the healing process.
General anesthesia is not required; the area is numbed locally, and the operation is completed within about 30 minutes. Pain and swelling are minimal. Most people return to social and professional life within 3–4 days. Stitches are usually removed within 5–7 days, and near-complete healing occurs in about one month. However, scar cream should be applied twice daily for 4–6 months.
The incision is usually hidden in the natural crease under the nose or along the lip line, so the scar is well concealed and fades over time. Scar treatment is supported with topical creams.
Yes. Since skin is removed, the result is considered permanent; however, with aging, the distance may gradually increase again.
The most common complication is a more visible scar than expected, especially in heavy smokers. Scar revision surgery may be required.
