A neck lift is a surgical procedure that aims to restore a youthful contour by addressing excess fat under the chin, loose or excess skin, and banding of the platysma muscle. It also targets concerns such as a double chin, jowls along the jawline, and visible platysmal bands.
Individuals in good overall health, preferably non‑smokers, who are bothered by lax skin and/or excess fat in the neck area are suitable candidates. The procedure is most commonly performed after the 30s.
Incisions typically start at the level of the earlobe, extend behind the ear, and continue along the hair‑bearing skin in front of the posterior neck. When an anterior approach is needed, an incision can also be placed in the natural crease under the chin. A submental incision is not always necessary; it is chosen when there is significant anterior laxity that cannot be corrected adequately with lateral incisions alone. On average, we need the under‑chin incision in about 30% of cases. Because the incisions are hidden within natural creases, scars are camouflaged and usually fade over time.
Depending on the patient, either local anesthesia or general anesthesia may be preferred. It would not be accurate to claim that general anesthesia is always required.
Yes, excess skin is removed.
If indicated for the patient, submental or neck liposuction can be performed.
Yes. For enhanced and harmonious results, it is often combined with facelift, eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), fat grafting, and lip lift. A holistic approach to the face typically provides better outcomes.
No. We also elevate and support the deeper muscular layer known as the platysma.
Bruising and swelling are common in the first few days. Most patients return to work and social life within 7–10 days. While complete healing takes 3–6 months, the majority of recovery occurs in the first month.
Heavy physical activities are not recommended for 6–8 weeks.
With proper care, results typically last around 10 years. Longevity depends on genetic factors, the physiology of aging, lifestyle, and maintaining a stable weight.
Although uncommon, risks include infection, hematoma, conspicuous scarring, and—rarely—nerve injury.
