Rhinoplasty Surgery

burun estetigi dr fevzi kunter erten

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure performed to change the shape and size of the nose. In short, it is the aesthetic surgery of the nose. During this operation, the cartilage and bony structures of the nose are reshaped and visible changes are made in the skin envelope. Breathing problems can also be addressed and improved.

What is Piezo Rhinoplasty?

Piezo rhinoplasty is a technique that uses a device called a piezo to cut bone with ultrasonic waves—without fracturing it—so that the bones and cartilages can be shaped with high precision. We also use this device in our surgeries.

Advantages of Piezo Rhinoplasty

• Precision and Accuracy: Ultrasonic technology in piezo rhinoplasty allows tissues to be treated more delicately, which can lead to more natural and symmetrical results.
• Less Bruising and Swelling: Unlike traditional instruments, bones and cartilages are exposed to less trauma with piezo, which can reduce bruising and swelling during recovery.
• Controlled Bleeding: Ultrasonic vibrations may help seal blood vessels more effectively, which can reduce intraoperative bleeding.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

• In traditional rhinoplasty, the surgeon may use instruments like an osteotome/hammer to fracture the bones, whereas piezo rhinoplasty uses ultrasonic technology.
• Piezo rhinoplasty can provide a more precise and controlled operation.

• Recovery after rhinoplasty varies from person to person.
• Generally, bruising and swelling decrease within a few weeks, and full recovery can take several months.
• Typically, the nose is protected with a thermoplastic splint for about 1 week, followed by taping for another 1–2 weeks.
• About 80% of the edema usually resolves within 1–2 months. Full settling takes around 6 months.

Patients generally do not report significant pain. If needed, pain is controlled easily with analgesics.

It is not recommended. Surgery and anesthesia may pose risks to both the mother and the baby.

In patients with thick skin, different techniques can be applied during surgery to thin the skin envelope. However, edema and the time it takes for the nose to settle are typically longer compared with patients who have thinner skin.

For suitable candidates, it is possible to shape the nose with filler. This is not appropriate for every patient, but it offers advantages such as taking about 10 minutes and allowing the patient to immediately continue daily life. The effect generally lasts around 1 year.

In Afro‑American and Asian patients, we often need to augment the dorsum and add cartilage—an approach that is almost entirely different from Caucasian rhinoplasty. Cartilage is taken from the patient’s rib or, if sufficient, from the nasal septum.

This is a surgery requested by a patient who is not satisfied with the result of a previous nose operation. It is necessary to wait at least 6 months after the first surgery.

If there is enough cartilage tissue, rib harvesting may not be necessary. An evaluation is required; in roughly 50% of cases, additional cartilage is needed.

For the patient, the process is broadly similar to the first surgery. For the surgeon, however, it is more challenging: separating scarred tissues and reshaping them is both more complex and time‑consuming.

Surgery can be performed after age 18 for men, and after age 17 for women with parental consent.
