Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure performed to change the shape and size of the nose—in short, the aesthetic surgery of the nose. During this operation, the cartilage and bony structures of the nose are reshaped and visible changes are made to the skin envelope. Breathing problems can also be addressed and improved.
It is a method that uses a device called Piezo to cut the nasal bones with ultrasonic waves—without fracturing them—allowing the bones and cartilages to be shaped with high precision. We also use this device in our surgeries.
Precision and Accuracy: The ultrasonic technology used in piezo rhinoplasty allows tissues to be treated more delicately, enabling more natural and symmetrical results.
Reduced Bruising and Swelling: Unlike traditional surgical instruments, bones and cartilages are exposed to less trauma with piezo, which may result in less bruising and swelling during recovery.
Controlled Bleeding: Ultrasonic vibrations can be more effective at sealing blood vessels, which may reduce the amount of bleeding during the operation.
- In traditional rhinoplasty, the surgeon may use instruments such as a hammer to fracture the bones, whereas piezo rhinoplasty uses ultrasonic technology. - Piezo rhinoplasty can provide a more precise and controlled procedure.
- Recovery after rhinoplasty varies from person to person.
- Generally, swelling and bruising decrease within a few weeks, and full recovery may take several months.
- The nose is typically followed with a plastic splint for about 1 week and then taped for another 1–2 weeks.
- About 80% of the edema usually resolves within 1–2 months. Full recovery takes 6 months.
In general, patients do not complain of significant pain. When necessary, pain is controlled with analgesics.
It is not recommended. Surgical intervention and anesthesia may harm both the baby and the mother.

In our patients with thick skin, we can thin the skin envelope by applying different techniques during rhinoplasty. However, in thick‑skinned patients, edema and the time it takes for the nose to settle are longer compared to others.
In suitable patients, it is possible to shape the nose with filler. This procedure is not appropriate for every patient, but it has advantages such as taking about 10 minutes and allowing the patient to resume daily life immediately after the procedure. Its effect generally lasts about 1 year.
In Afro‑American and Asian patients, we often need to augment the dorsum and add cartilage—an operation that is almost completely different from that in Caucasian patients. Cartilage is taken from the patient’s rib or, if sufficient, from the nasal septum.
It is the surgery requested by a patient who is not satisfied with the result of a previous nose operation. One should wait at least 6 months after the first surgery.
If there is a sufficient amount of cartilage, it may not be necessary to harvest rib cartilage. An evaluation is required, but in about 50% of cases additional cartilage is needed.
For the patient, the process is frankly similar to the first surgery. For the surgeon, it is more challenging: separating injured tissues and reshaping them is both more difficult and takes longer.
